This form of protection applies to what are termed “works”.
Registration is not required as copyright exists as a right owned by the author or original creator of the work.
Works may be of authorship (books, magazines, published articles, essays etc), or artistic works such as drawings, paintings, music, films and, generally all forms of artistic or creative expression which become “fixed” i.e. which appear in some tangible form.
Copyright in such works are generally protected for 70 years from the date of death of the author but there are exceptions to this in the case of specific kinds of copyright protection including data bases (15 years from the end of the year in which the database was completed.).
